A U.S. postman suffering from an eating disorder having been arrested for eating 1.3 tons of mail is fake news. There is no truth to a report that a postman with an eating disorder had been discovered to have been consuming the mail meant to be delivered and then was arrested. If the story sounds crazy and absurd that’s because it is just that and is false.
Where did this fake news originate? World Daily News Report published the fake news article reporting that a U.S. postman had been arrested after police learned he ate 1.3 tons of mail. The fake news claimed that this postman suffered from an eating disorder. You can read the fake news below.
A mailman of the United States Postal Services was arrested this morning by the NYPD on charges of stealing and eating more than 75,000 letters he was supposed to deliver.
38-year old Diego Ramirèz was arrested at his residence around 7:15 AM by officers of the New York Police Department and deputies of the New York City Sheriff’s Office (NYCSO).
A joint investigation led over the last few months after several people complained about their mail being stolen, revealed that the letter carrier was actually eating a large portion of the envelopes he was supposed to deliver.
In a press conference a few hours later, NYPD Chief of Department Tom Salinger said the arrest came after a 2-month joint investigation between the NYPD and the NYCSO.
“At first, we really thought someone was stealing some of our New Yorkers’ mail for profit. The investigators were amazed when they caught Mr. Ramirèz tearing the letters to pieces and eating them!”
However, there is no truth to the above story. What was the problem with the story to make it false? For one thing, there is no “NYPD Chief of Department Tom Salinger” but rather the NYPD Chief of Department is Terence Monahan who was recently sworn in as chief of department, the NYPD’s highest-ranking uniformed officer. Also, there is no press release or conference about this story.
Additionally, the origin of the photograph used in the fake news can be found here. As for the real story, the photo is actually a Bronx gang member by the name of William “Wobbles” Soler weighing 500 pounds who pleaded guilty to gun dealing charges and will now spend 15 years in state prison.
