A Low-Income Dad Is Being Celebrated For Returning $1200 He Received By Accident

Gerrell McAllister has been struggling for a while to pay his bills. As the father of a 5-year-old daughter he is spread pretty thin working as a cashier at a pet story. His luck could have changed recently when he accidentally received $1,200 in his PayPal account. Instead, he did the responsible thing and alerted the person who sent him the money.

In an interview with BuzzFeed, the honest father said, “Returning the money was instinctive because of the values my mom instilled in me. I’m trying to be the best person and provide the best example for my daughter.”

He recently lost his mom and realized he wanted to do right by her teachings about morality.

The $1200 PayPal payment was intended for Melissa Trusler and was sent by her dad, Alan Trusler. He didn’t realize at the time that he was sending the $1200 payment to his daughter’s old phone number, which ended up being deposited into McAllister’s account.

It wasn’t the first time a mistake had occurred, he had previously sent his daughter $55 and McAllister also promptly returned that payment.

When Alan Trusler realized how quickly the money was refunded, he asked his daughter to write a thank-you letter.

McAllister responded to her with details of his story and Trusler was so touched that she shared the message on her Facebook page.

“Sharing a story from this morning…. My father sent me $$ via PayPal as a bday present to help with a couch I just bought. Due to changes in phone numbers etc. the $$ went to someone else. This person reversed the $$, I thanked him and he sent me this note,” she wrote.

Here’s what the honest 28-year-old man sent in response:

“You’re so very welcome! But if you could tell your family and friends that a low income 28 year old Black man from Tacoma with a 5 year old daughter returned your money, I would find that helpful in improving race relations while reaffirming the dope a** culture we as Western Washingtonians have worked so hard to cultivate. And that, in turn, would help me to stop kicking myself in the ass for remaining morally sound through the tough times my family and I are experiencing at the moment, lol. In short, share the story, spread the love. Thank you.”

She added his PayPal info because people asked to donate. If you’re curious his email is gerrellmcallister@gmail.com.

The post went viral and soon after it was shared McAllister started receiving money into his PayPal account from random strangers.

Trusler also posted a thank you note she received from her random connection.

Trusler sent a follow-up message from McAllister thanking her and everyone for their support.

McAllister hasn’t said how much money he has received, but for him it’s about way more than the random act of kindness.

“I do receive an email every time someone makes a donation and I check the message. I just care about the message because people are sending some great, uplifting stuff and I’m glad to be an inspiration because they’re inspiring me in return.”
