Katy Perry Saying Human Flesh Is The Best Meat, Cannibalism Got A Bad Rap Is Fake News

Wikimedia Commons

Katy Perry stating that human flesh is the best meat and that cannibalism received a bad rap is fake news. There is no truth that the pop singer was quoted as saying that human flesh is delicious meat.

Where did this fake news originate? YourNewsWire published the fake news article reporting that Perry believes that human flesh is the best and tasty meat. You can read the fake news below.

Human flesh is the finest meat in the world, according to Katy Perry, who puts the “exquisite flavor” of the meat down to “the taboo nature of the product” and the fact that “forbidden pleasures are always the most delicious.”

Going as far as to claim that cannibalism is “way more popular than you might think”, Katy Perry also claimed that “so many people in Hollywood tell you that human meat is the best, the absolute best, meat in the world.”

Speaking on French radio, the Bon Appetit singer also claimed cannibalism has “gotten a bad rap” due to “squeamish Christians and their hypocritical virtues and morals”, but consuming the flesh of humans is actually “super healthy and good for you.”

“There are life-enhancing vitamins and minerals in human flesh that you can’t get from animal meat,” Perry claimed.

However, there is no truth to the above story, according to Hoax Alert. Their research found no reports in the French media about any such claims made by Perry. Additionally, the story suspiciously failed to mention which station on “French radio” supposedly carried the Perry interview.

Here are some examples of people sharing the fake news on social media.

Cannibalism by itself is not illegal according to Cornell’s Legal Information Institute:

Cannibalism is the consumption of another human’s body matter, whether consensual or not. In the United States, there are no laws against cannibalism per se, but most, if not all, states have enacted laws that indirectly make it impossible to legally obtain and consume the body matter. Murder, for instance, is a likely criminal charge, regardless of any consent. Further, even if someone consents to being eaten and kills himself, the cannibal may still be liable for criminal or civil actions based on laws governing the abuse or desecration of a corpse, which vary from state to state.

New Star Wars Movie Filming Near Iowa Or California With Large Number Of Extras Needed Is False

The new Star Wars movie being filmed near Iowa or California with a large number of extras needed is fake news. There is no truth to a series of reports circulating social media that suggested that the new Star Wars film is being shot in Iowa or California and seeking extras. The template reads:

[TOWN], [State] – Reports out of Hollywood this morning are confirming that a portion of the next Star Wars movie will be filmed near [Town], [State]. The undisclosed location near [Town] will represent a previously unknown planet in the Star Wars universe.

No details were released as to exactly when production would take place in the [Town] area but they stated that it should begin no later than next spring. A casting call for extras will be announced well before that time period, however. Local fans of the film series were understandably excited about the news and especially excited about the prospect of becoming an extra in the film after producers made this short statement released to the press earlier today:

“We think that [Town] is a great place to find the hundreds of extras for our alien population and we’re very excited about filming here.”

Let us know what you think about this exciting news in the comments section below.

However, there is no truth to the above story, according to Hoax Alert. That site reported that the fake news recently has been attributed to Defiance, Iowa but also Vista, California or Waterloo, Iowa.

Here are some examples of people sharing the fake news on social media.

Weeks away from the release of Star Wars: The Last Jedi, six months from the debut of Solo: A Star Wars Story, and production on Star Wars: Episode IX is set to begin next summer, where will the franchise be headed after the already-announced feature films?

Speaking on the latest episode of The Star Wars Show, Lucasfilm president Kathleen Kennedy spoke about how the Star Wars Story Group is shaping the next decade worth of stories in the series.

“We’re sitting down now, we’re talking about the next ten years of Star Wars stories and we’re looking at narratively where that might go; future stories beyond Episode 9, with these new characters, Rey, Poe, Finn, BB-8, but we’re also looking at working with people that are interested in coming into the Star Wars world and taking us to places that we haven’t been yet, and that’s exciting too because it’s a vast galaxy far, far away… The possibilities are endless.”

What did you think of the fake news about Star Wars being filmed in various towns with large number of extras? Did you believe the fake news or see people sharing it falsely on social media? Let us know in the comments section.

How To Add A Blog To Your Website And Start Building Great Content

I know. The thought of creating and managing a blog sounds like a chore. “Is having a blog on my site really that important? Will I ever see an ROI from the time and effort it will take me to launch and manage one?” You ask yourself. “I’m a B2B company so a blog wouldn’t make sense for me, right?” You wonder.

Today, MediaKix.com estimates that there are over 440 million blogs around the world.

The reason for this huge number of content outlets is not only because of their importance to your content marketing strategy, but also because creating and maintaining a blog has gotten easier over the years. There are many tools out there that make the entire process quite simple. Here’s how to get started.

Add A Blog

Your Website And Blog Are Separate

Your website is a static brochure of your company—not much changes (unless you change your product or services) in order to attract visitors back once they have already visited your site. While it is important to experiment with the design and experience of your website to optimize conversions, you should not change your site too frequently, otherwise, you will have a hard time staying indexed for certain keywords in search engines.

Your blog, however, is an ever-growing and dynamic source of premium content that attracts new website visits like moths to light. The content you consistently create (and note the keyword of “consistently” in that sentence) allows your site to become more dynamic and ever-changing without impacting the user experience of your product or services pages.

The topics that you cover in your blog give you unlimited opportunities to reach audiences across the web that might otherwise not find you. Your product or service may not serve many purposes for someone across the globe (or even someone across the country), but your perspectives and insight could prove very useful to the same individual.

74 Million Websites Use WordPress

Let’s assume that your site and all of its pages already exist. In this case, the easiest way to add a blog to your website is by creating a subdirectory—think YourSite.com/Blog. You could manage separate domains, but that only reduces your SEO reach and makes it more difficult for your audience to navigate between your dual existences. When your website and blog exist under the same domain, you’ll make things easier for yourself and your readers.

Your site host may likely support WordPress, an industry standard publishing platform. This installation is simple and takes under five minutes to complete, but you should first understand the platform’s basic setup instructions. You may very well need the help of a developer, as these steps involve accessing a server and using FTP, among other things. If you’re just starting out, you might even consider creating your website within the WordPress realm; it’s free, so you’ll only need to pay for your domain and hosting space.

Add A Blog
WordPress

Upon installation, all you’ve got to do in WordPress is navigate to Pages > Add New. Name your page and publish it. Next, navigate to your site settings. Designate this new section as your Posts page. That’s it. From here, you can write and publish as much as you’d like. The content management system will help with the rest.

WordPress requires some attention if you’d like to skin your site with highly customizable themes and features, but the wide range of controls provided make it very well worth it.

Also, like we’ve talked about in the past, make sure your site is secure by using SSL on your full site.

There are several other options that are simpler.

More Tools On The Market

Other available tools include Blogger, Medium, Tumblr, and HubSpot.

Joining Medium with a free account is very simple, although you will need to hand over some cash if you’d like to own a custom domain with the platform. Still, the community built around this publication network is a great way to reach people around the world.

Blogger, owned by Google, is a great place for beginners to launch their sites. It offers free domains on Blogspot.com and also features integration with Google AdWords and analytics tools. It’s pretty effortless to get started with this platform, and it’s made even easier if you have an existing Google account. Sites hosted on this platform are very templated and limited in terms of design and functionality. Some users prefer this, though, as they aren’t interested in the advanced technology behind other platforms.

Tumblr is a social network with users that share everything from photos and videos to stories, music, art, and much more. It’s free to create your site and the platform is very easy to navigate.

HubSpot is a software platform dedicated to inbound marketing. It promises to help companies “attract visitors, convert leads, and close customers.” HubSpot’s automation software is on the advanced side and caters to people and groups that are looking to blog on the business side of things.

Digging Through Documentation

We’ve explained a few of the leading blog platforms in today’s industry as well as the different reasons why users flock to each. Hopefully, you’ve managed to identify which tool might work for you. In that case, move forward by visiting the knowledge guides that we’ve linked to above.

While it may seem overwhelming at first, the process of launching a blog is just a series of smaller puzzle pieces that will come together to produce a big picture. It’s up to you to put it together.

How to Change Your Life Using Punctuated Equilibrium

Charles Darwin’s On the Origin of Species is one of the most remarkable books ever written. It explained, for the first time and in plain English, the theory of evolution.

In doing so, it shined a light on biology and the natural sciences, which laid the groundwork for many of the great discoveries of the twentieth century.

More than that, it provided a metaphor for many other systems in the world around us. We talk about people, marketing, and ideas evolving in the same way species do.

However, Darwin got one thing wrong in On the Origin of Species, which has an important implication on how you think about evolution as a metaphor for how to change your life.

He believed species evolved gradually and linearly. However, research conducted after the book’s publication showed that evolution happens through long periods of stasis where there is very little change going on, punctuated by periods of rapid growth.

What Is Punctuated Equilibrium?

This phenomenon, called punctuated equilibrium, is the way that most natural systems evolve. Understanding punctuated equilibrium is essential to understanding how to change your life.

The left image is a gradual, linear view of Darwin’s theory of evolution where species emerge gradually and consistently over time. The right image is a “punctuated equilibrium” view of evolution where there are long periods of very little change and short periods of “explosions” with huge amounts of evolutionary activity.

punctuated equilibrium

The Cambrian Explosion and Punctuated Equilibrium

The Cambrian explosion is the most well-known example of the rapid growth stage of punctuated equilibrium in evolutionary history.

Over a period of only 20 million years (a short period in evolutionary time representing only 0.5 percent of Earth’s 4-billion-year evolutionary history), almost all present animal classes appeared.

Before the Cambrian explosion, most organisms were simple, composed of individual cells. By the end of that time period, the world was populated by a huge variety of complex organisms.

During the explosion, the rate of diversification accelerated by 10x, an order of magnitude.

Punctuated equilibrium changed the way biologists and scientists thought about evolution. It should also change how we think about areas where we use evolution as a metaphor for how to change our lives and our personal growth.

Most people have a gradual view of life changes. We think they happen at a constant and consistent rate.

When we hear someone’s life story, like in an interview, it sounds gradual, linear, and consistent:

  1. First, I got this great job.

  2. Then, I started this great company.

  3. Now, I sold it to another company.

It sounds like a straight line heading up and to the right, just the way Darwin imagined evolution.

However, what they’re really doing is just connecting the dots of the high points.

punctuated eq in life

When we don’t have all the details, we assume linearity and gradualism. We assume, like Darwin did of evolution, that everyone else’s life path is up and to the right while it’s only our life that is bumpy and chaotic.

In a three-minute interview, you don’t get the full story about how the person had long periods of stasis where they felt flat or stuck.

Maybe they had a long period of stasis where they hated their “great” job for the first six months and their coworkers were pricks, but after a year they finally found a part of the company where they fit in and started to flourish, resulting in a period of rapid growth.

Or maybe they were at a job for three years that didn’t seem to be going anywhere, but was actually laying the groundwork for a seemingly overnight success they had later on.

In the same way punctuated equilibrium was counterintuitive to Darwin’s view of evolution, it is counterintuitive to us applied to our own lives.

The way you change your life is in short bursts, or Cambrian Leaps. You will feel stuck in the same pattern for a long time, doing the work day in and day out, and then have short periods of drastic change and growth.

How To Change Your Life with Cambrian Leaps

Rob Walling, who I profiled in my book, The End of Jobs, shared a graph of what this looked like for his own businesses.

Does this graph look familiar? It should! (SOURCE)

Rob started releasing products in 2005, but the Cambrian Leaps for him came in 2008 and 2012.

If you heard Rob give a two-minute introduction on his career, he’d just hit the high points because that’s all he has time for. You can condense only so much of a 10-year story into a sound bite.

Why does this matter? Because this illusion of linearity and gradualism causes people to make some mistakes in the way they approach their personal growth.

Instead of looking for situations that will facilitate periods of rapid growth, they try to gradually improve things. They let the small improvements crowd out the big ones and never get to the periods of rapid growth, the Cambrian Leaps.

This was the case with Rob. In 2005, he released his first product, and then spent 2006 and 2007 trying to gradually improve that product. It helped, but the real breakthrough was when he started releasing more products.

In 2008, he released a swath of products in the plugin space that resulted in a Cambrian Leap that made him Rob “the plugin developer guy.”

He wasn’t Rob “the ebook guy” anymore.

His next Cambrian Leap in 2012 was when he became Rob “the SaaS guy.”

He changed his business model from selling one-time sales to recurring products, and this created a huge leap.

The Snowball, a biography of Warren Buffett, offers another case study in Cambrian Leaps.

Buffett’s career looked very much like a graph of punctuated equilibrium. He would have periods of amazing returns and then flat periods where he wasn’t doing a whole lot better than the market.

However, during those periods of stasis, he was doing bold things, reinventing his business model or his investing philosophy in a way that created the next big Cambrian Leap where he experienced rapid growth.

It’s difficult to keep working on Cambrian Leap projects, because when you are in the middle of a stasis period of doing something unconventional, the people around you seem to be making better progress with gradual improvements.

There were many periods in Buffett’s career where people said he was washed up. Journalists and observers pulled out dozens of graphs that looked something like this of his performance over the past few years:

It’s only years later that we are able to look back at Buffett’s track record and see that it turned out like this:

Courage is the Only Thing

A large part of what I take away from Rob and Buffett’s examples is the importance of courage.

Many us invest our time into projects which don’t have the potential to create a Cambrian Leap.

Instead of just thinking about how to get a little bit better at your job, or improve the conversions 10 percent% on your website, you should be focusing a meaningful amount of your time and energy on projects with Cambrian Leap potential.

Of course, there is an element of luck at play here. You can’t know for sure if the project will be a Cambrian Leap, but you can know if it has potential.

In The 80/20 Principle, Richard Koch provides a good heuristic for potential Cambrian Leaps:

Is it unconventional? Will it multiply, not add, results?

It’s things like changing your business model, not improving website conversions, that lead to these Cambrian Leaps.

It’s taking a night class in some seemingly random subject that you’re interested in instead of grinding another ten hours on something with only a moderate upside.

I believe that’s how to change your life.

Consistency Still Matters

One way this metaphor gets misinterpreted is people think if they focus on these big Cambrian Leaps, then they can skip the flat periods and zoom straight up.

The truth is that it also takes time to figure out what the next big leap will be. It takes times to develop the skills and resources necessary to make the leap. The flat periods are necessary and where most of the work happens.

Rob has been upfront that he thinks if he had started with trying to make an enormous leap from never having worked on software to running a complex SaaS business, he would have failed.

Taking it one leap at a time and then focusing on building up his skills and resources for the next leap let him increase the odds of his success.

Indeed, these Cambrian Leaps are often the result of long periods of consistent work. It just takes the improvements time to show up as leaps.

When I released my first book, it was a big Cambrian leap moment for me that changed the course of my career. However the success of the book was due to over three years of work on my marketing platform and the book itself.

For most of that three-year period those three year, my writing work felt pretty flat and static. It was only obvious only in retrospect that the hour every morning I spent working on my writing would result in a Cambrian Leap.

The Benefits of Underemployment

It takes a lot of courage to follow unconventional convictions even when it feels like others are flying past.

One solution that everyone can implement is captured in a quip from Amos Tversky, the research partner of the Nobel Prize-winning psychologist Daniel Kahneman.

“The secret to doing good research is always to be a little underemployed. You waste years by not being able to waste hours.”

We too often conflate busyness with productivity, and efficiency with effectiveness.

A better approach is to be a little bit underemployed, say working five days a week on your main project and spending one day tinkering toward your next Cambrian Leap. You’re still optimizing your landing page to trying to bump up the conversions by 10 percent, but you’re also thinking about that next big thing.

It’s important to give yourself some space because, often, the work that leads to Cambrian Leaps feels like a waste. You’re just in the shop tinkering.

I wrote my blog on Saturdays for three years. At the time, I wasn’t sure if it was a good use of time, but I had a hunch that it could turn into a Cambrian Leap and I had a lot of fun tinkering with it anyway.

Asking yourself “What do I find interesting and easy that others find difficult?” is often a good way to identify Cambrian Leap opportunities.

Writing was one of those things for me.

In retrospect, those years helped me improve as a writer and build enough of a platform to launch a book, which turned out to be a Cambrian Leap for me.

Since then, I have always tried to be at least a little bit underemployed in order to have time to work on projects with Cambrian Leap potential. It’s time that I set aside to read or work on whatever is piquing my interest, even if it doesn’t seem immediately applicable.

If you’re feeling a bit overemployed and “stuck,” try asking yourself the two questions that helped me identify Cambrian Leaps in the past:

  1. Am I working on something that is unconventional, which will multiply, not add, results?

  2. What do I find interesting and easy that others find difficult?

I’ve developed a system using this concept (and others) that helps people plan for the future while still staying open to opportunities and having time to ‘tinker’.

Getting Started with Instagram for Your Business: 8 Simple Steps

More than 500 million people use Instagram every day (1TechCrunch, September 2017), and over five million businesses use Instagram to tell their stories visually, connect with their fans, and build their brand (2Instagram business blog, September 2017).

If you’re new to Instagram, it might be daunting to think about how you can stand out in such a large crowd. But getting started with Instagram is much easier than it might look.

In this post, you’ll learn the basics of using Instagram, from how to set up your profile and how to post a photo or story to Instagram, to some more advanced stuff like Instagram analytics and using some neat tools to help you grow your following.

Let’s jump right in, here’s our guide on how to use Instagram 📸

How to Use Instagram: An Introduction to Instagram Marketing

How to use Instagram for your business

1. Set up your account and profile

If you have not downloaded the Instagram app, you can grab it from the App Store, Google Play Store, or Microsoft Store.

When you create your Instagram account on the mobile app, the app will guide you through a few basic steps for getting set up. Here are two things to take note of:

Profile photo

Your Instagram profile photo will be displayed as a circle. If you are using your business logo, be sure to keep it in the center of your image. Also, as your profile image will look relatively small in the app, you might want to use a prominent logo mark, instead of a logo with text.

Instagram profile photo

Profile information

The app will not prompt you to fill out your profile information but it’ll be great to do so. To fill out your profile information, go to your profile in the app and tap on “Edit Profile”. The two fields to fill out is your website and your bio. If you would like to change your Instagram username (i.e. @username), you can also change it here.

Instagram profile information

Congrats! You have just set up your Instagram account!

2. Post photos or videos

When you want to post a photo or video, just hit the “+” icon at the bottom. Instagram will show you the most recent photos in your photo library. You can also choose to take a new photo or video by tapping on “Photo” or “Video” respectively.

Select your media

Post photos or videos

Here are a few tips:

  • If you are choosing photos from your library, you can upload your photo as a portrait or landscape. Select your preferred photo and tap on the icon with two arrows in the lower-left corner of the preview. You can then move and zoom the photo to adjust how you want it to fit within the frame.

  • You can also upload up to 10 photos and videos into a single Instagram post. Tap on the icon with two overlapping squares in the lower-right corner of the preview and select your media.

  • When you are taking a new video, press and hold the record button to record your video. If you want to film a few different things, you can let go of the button, point your phone camera at something else, and press and hold the record button again to continue with the recording.

Edit your media

Post photos or videos 2

Once you have selected your media for your post, you can add a filter or edit its orientation, brightness, contrast, and more. When your media is ready to go, just tap “Next” to fill out your post details.

  • Write a caption: Your caption appears just below your media when your post is published. You can mention another Instagram account (i.e. @username) and add hashtags (i.e. hashtags) here. Accounts that you mention will receive a notification about it, and your post will appear when someone searches for the hashtags you used.

  • Tag People: If you are posting a photo or a collection of photos, you can tag multiple Instagram accounts in each photo. The accounts you tag will also receive a notification about it.

  • Add Location: If your media is a photo or video of a location, you could add a location tag to your post. Your post will appear when someone searches for posts in that specific location.

  • Social shares: If you have connected other social media profiles to your Instagram account, you can easily share your posts on those profiles by toggling the switch.

Here’s the moment… once your post is ready, tap “Share” and Instagram will publish your post. Your post will appear on the feed of everyone who follows you.

If you have been following the steps, you have just posted your first Instagram post! Awesome!

One of the best practices for growing an Instagram account is to post consistently. When studying 55 brands on Instagram, Union Metrics found that some brands lost followers when they didn’t post consistently (3Free whitepaper about brands on Instagram, April 2014).

3. Post Instagram stories

More than 250 million people post Instagram stories every day (4Instagram Press, August 2017). Instagram stories are a new content format on Instagram. They are photos and videos that disappear after 24 hours. Verified accounts are able to add a link to their Instagram stories to drive people to their preferred website.

Unlike your normal Instagram posts, Instagram stories do not appear on your profile gallery or your followers’ feed. They are hidden behind your profile photo on a separate feed at the top of the app.

Instagram Stories

To post an Instagram story, just swipe right on your Instagram feed. You’ll be brought to the camera mode where you can take a photo or video or upload a media taken in the last 24 hours. Once you have taken or selected a photo, you can add stickers (including hashtag and location tag stickers), draw, and add text.

Post an Instagram story

Here are 10 different ways of using Instagram Stories:

  • Tell a story

  • Explain how to do something

  • Promote a blog post

  • Share a list

  • Announce promotions

  • Offer discounts

  • Share an interesting statistics

  • Share a quote

  • Introduce an Instagram takeover

  • Make an announcement

If you want to use Instagram Stories for any of the purposes in the list above, here are 10 free, easy-to-edit Instagram Stories templates you can use.

4. Find people to follow

Next, let’s follow some accounts to see what they have been posting or will be posting.

If you have not followed any accounts, Instagram will prompt you to “Find people to follow” on your feed and provide three ways to discover people to follow. You can either connect your Facebook account, connect your contacts, or follow profiles suggested by Instagram. A better approach, I feel, is to use the Instagram search and explore feature.

In the search and explore tab, Instagram will show you Instagram stories and posts that you might like. Here’s how I would go about finding people to follow:

  • Type in a keyword that is relevant to your business in the search bar

  • Check out the suggested Instagram profiles or hashtags

  • Follow the profiles that are relevant to your business

  • Check out profiles that are recommended to you when you follow a profile

Find people to follow

Ideally, it’ll be great to follow your customers. (Imagine your favorite brand following you!) While it’s quite impossible to find all your customers on Instagram unless you know them personally, you could get their help for this. Here are some ways:

  • Mention your new Instagram profile on your other social media profiles such as your Facebook Page

  • Add a link to your Instagram profile on your website or blog

  • Include your Instagram username on your name cards

When people follow you on Instagram, you’ll receive a notification. Check out their profiles and follow them, too.

5. Comment on posts

Social media isn’t only about publishing. It’s also about engaging.

To comment on a post, tap on the speech bubble icon below the photo or video. You can either leave a new comment or reply to an existing comment.

Comment on posts

When your followers comment on your photos (yay!), such as leaving a remark or asking you a question about your business, it’s a good practice to reply them as soon as possible to show that you’re listening to them on social media.

After interviewing more than 1,000 people, Sprout Social found that 70 percent of the people interviewed are more likely to use a brand’s product or service when the brand responds to them on social. When the brand doesn’t respond, 30 percent of them will go to a competitor instead (5 The Q2 2016 Sprout Social Index, April 2016).

Engaging with your followers helps to build your brand, which can help you turn them into customers and turn customers into loyal customers.

6. Convert your profile to a business profile

Okay, let’s get a little more advanced.

If you are using the Instagram account for your business or your company, I would recommend converting your Instagram profile to a business profile. With a business profile, you get to add additional information about your business on your profile and promote your Instagram posts. More importantly, you get analytics for your Instagram account.

Instagram business profile

All you need to convert your profile to a business profile is a Facebook Page. Here’s how to do it:

  • Go to your profile on the mobile app and tap on the gear icon

  • Tap on “Switch to Business Profile”

  • Select the Facebook Page that you want to be associated with your Instagram account

  • Fill out your email address, phone number, and postal address

  • Tap “Done”

Switch to Instagram business profile

7. Use the free analytics

Instagram Insights is the free analytics tool for Instagram accounts with a business profile. It provides you with a wealth of data that you can use to measure and improve your Instagram marketing.

To access your Instagram Insights, go to your profile and tap on the chart icon.

Instagram Insights

Here are some ways you can use the data in your Instagram Insights:

  • See the changes in your key metrics, such as follower growth, in the last seven days

  • Find out when your followers are most active to find your best posting times

  • Know which are your top-performing posts and stories

  • Learn about your followers’ demographics

If you are interested in learning more about Instagram analytics, we wrote a guide on the topic, which explains more than 20 Instagram metrics, goes into the details of Instagram Insights, and elaborates on how you can act on your Instagram data.

8 Effective Ways To Secure Your Organization From The Increasing Security Threats

In 2015, The ISACA’s Global Cybersecurity Status Report conducted an online polling of 3,439 ISACA members in 129 countries, including 1,211 members in the United States.

The survey revealed that out of the more than 3,400 members of the IT association, a whopping 83 percent volunteered that cyber attacks were among the top three threats they

were facing and only a paltry 38 percent were prepared to deal with the problem.

The problem is getting more hydra-headed as days are going by. Hackers have so much perfected their act to the extent that it is not only businessmen that are at their mercy any longer.

Governments and private individuals are subjected to one form of cybercrime or the other. The whole situation has rather gone awry. A report released by Equifax revealed that the records for 143 million US citizens were accessed by attackers through a security breach.

As if that was not enough, reports from Seoul was able to confirm that North Korean-linked hackers were behind the digital theft of $81 million from Bangladesh’s Central Bank.

With the world going more tech-savvy, it becomes more difficult to protect important information from these hell-bent no-gooders.

For you to effectively checkmate the increasing cyber crimes in your organization you need to put in place the following 9 ideas.

1. Know your data

The very first step and about the most important is to know your data. It is ridiculous that some people don’t even know what to secure. Many firms don’t know what data is hidden in their vaults.

There is absolutely no way you can secure your data if you don’t have a good grasp of what you are trying to secure. A recent survey by information management firm Veritas says that 59 percent of the data in UK IT system is unclassified “dark data.”

2. Information governance

To instill a culture of security in any organization, it is absolutely necessary to enforce information governance. This should not be at the behest of the communication information department alone. It should run right across all the departments in the setup.

All users should be availed of mandatory computer based training. It is very important that the training should include the implications of security breaches, how they hamper the productivity and output of the organization, and how to avoid them.

3. Encrypt your data

Data encryption is an outright means of securing information. Once your data is encrypted, it becomes practically impossible for hackers to break the code. Even when the firm’s IT vault is hacked, the data and information they get will be completely useless to them since they won’t be able to evaluate the data.

For organizations with a lot of data and files, a lot of issues, like lack of consistency, can arise from doing this manually. Hence, for such businesses, this function can be assigned to trustworthy VPN Service Providers to automatically encrypt data periodically, while also providing other security measures. This makes VPNs a current go-to for businesses.

However, it’s important for every business to compare and contrast different VPNs, and explore VPN reviews from trustworthy VPN sources so as to choose the right VPN for their business and not end up with VPN service provider that is no different from a malware.

4. Vouchsafe your communication information team (CIT)

It is of utmost importance that you have absolute trust in your communication information team. As the powerhouse of the organization’s information, the CIT must be above board in everything.

The CIT team should shun every act of sharp practices. They should be a group of experts passionate about their work and the organization in retrospect. They should be unapproachable by elements from outside the firm.

5. Cyber Security awareness training

Many organizations are not putting enough resources into cybersecurity awareness. They tend to play more of a lip service to this all-important factor.

A report released by the National Cybersecurity Institute says that “Traditionally, there has been a problematic disconnect and lack of both integration and collaboration between the C-suites and IT departments.”

All segments of the organization should be made to go through an in-depth cybersecurity awareness training. The training should be made simple, concise, clear, and straight to the point to allow for proper comprehension.

6. Ensure maximum passwords security

The case has been made of very strong passwords with a mix up of special characters. Be as it may, the best check on cybercrimes is to regularly change passwords. Biometric and two-factor authentication can also be activated to ensure an even stronger password, or totally be used in place of passwords.

The site administrator should also be a careful person since plugins would be added to the server from time to time, the server should not be made accessible to all comers.

Post-it notes plastered to end-user PCs with lists of complex passwords should be completely discouraged.

7. Secure your wired network

All attention should not be focused only on the wireless side of the network when talking about security threats. Since hackers can use social engineering to get physical access to corporate networks, the security of the wired portion of the network should also be taken very seriously.

8. Store fewer confidential data

In the face of the tech savviness of hackers, it won’t be a very wise idea to have too much confidential data stored in any retrievable form.

Hard copies of some vital information can be made and stored in files. Though this may sound archaic, it is better than to cave in, to these current cybersecurity challenges.

With the 8 ideas above implemented, your business will be on a safer side with regards to hackers.
