The Role of Thought Leadership Content in the B2B Buyer’s Journey

asmuSe / Pixabay

While many firms are already investing in content marketing, the latest research continues to underscore the importance of strong thought leadership content as a B2B marketing and sales tool.

A recent study by Edelman and LinkedIn revealed that thought leadership content containing valuable insights plays an important role throughout the entire B2B buyer’s journey—from firm awareness to consideration and selection. More than 1,300 C-level executives and decision makers across a wide range of industries were surveyed for the study titled “How Thought Leadership Impacts B2B Demand Generation.” The findings contain many valuable nuggets of insights into how B2B executives value and use content throughout the buyer’s journey.

Here are some of the key takeaways:

Decision makers value thought leadership AND spend considerable time on it

An overwhelming majority (90%) of C-suite executives and decision makers surveyed find thought leadership content important. In fact, half of executives surveyed reported that they spend more than an hour per week on thought leadership, and 20% spend more than 4 hours per week on thought leadership, emphasizing the importance of educational content to business decision makers.

Strong thought leadership content is also great for a brand’s reputation

Not only do executives spend considerable time on thought leadership, they also use it to evaluate firms that are publishing content. 90% of C-Suite executives surveyed agreed that their respect and admiration for an organization increased after engaging with strong thought leadership. And more than 80% said that thought leadership has increased their trust in a vendor organization. As author and keynote speaker Andrew Davis has said, “Content builds relationships. Relationships are built on trust. Trust drives revenue.”

Thought leadership content drives the middle of the marketing funnel

Despite the fact that only 33% of thought leaders surveyed thought that their content was generating contact from potential clients, the study found that in reality, 55% of C-suite executives had given an organization their contact information in exchange for content. And interestingly, 42% said that they’d actually reached out to an organization as a follow up to strong content.

Thought leadership content provides a window into a firm’s thinking

64% of executives agreed that reading thought leadership is one of the best ways to get a sense of the type and caliber of thinking an organization is likely to deliver. And in the process, 49% agreed that reading thought leadership is also an important way that they vet organizations.

Insightful content can earn new RFP opportunities

Content marketing can also help a firm earn new requests for proposal (RFP) opportunities. 41% of decision makers said that impressive thought leadership content led them to include a firm in an RFP opportunity, with 40% saying that good content directly contributed to their decision to trust a firm they were not previously familiar with.

It can also directly lead to new business and higher fees

When executives were surveyed about the impact of thought leadership on their buying decisions, 48% of C-level executives said that good content directly led them to award business to certain firms over others. And nearly half of decision makers reported that they are more willing to pay a premium to work with an organization that has publicly articulated a clear vision for the future, underscoring the importance of strong, public content for B2B firms.

Content is incredibly undervalued in its ability to draw in new business

Despite the overwhelming evidence above that content plays a major role in business development, when asked if their content was driving business, only 17% of thought leaders believed that their content was generating RFP proposals. And only 20% attributed new business directly to their thought leadership efforts, indicative of a massive gap in attribution of content’s ability to generate business. Simply put, firms that aren’t offering valuable and insightful content are missing out on opportunities to generate new business.

Thought leadership is a double-edged sword

Strong thought leadership content impacts the entire marketing funnel, from firm awareness, to firm trust, and, eventually to revenue generation. However weak content—content that lacks value, relevancy, insight and differentiation—can be equally impactful for a firm’s reputation. The study found that more than 50% of C-level executives had lost respect for an organization because of poor thought leadership, and more than 30% had removed firms from their consideration set as a direct result of weak thought leadership.

The current content landscape is lacking

In spite of all the content marketing hype and all the content being created by B2B firms everywhere, executives reported that they do not gain valuable insights from more than 50% of the thought leadership they consume. And only 14% of executives believed that the majority of content they’ve consumed has been very good or excellent in quality.

Valuable, insightful content is what’s needed

While at first this may seem discouraging, the silver lining is that there is an enormous opportunity for firms to better showcase their knowledge and establish themselves as trusted resources in their fields. B2B buyers are looking for helpful content, that is relevant to their situation and will ultimately help to inform their selection process. The study provided some insights into what that looks like:

  • Succinctly conveyed insights — 70% of decision makers cited short-form 3-4 pages as important when considering thought leadership

  • Visualized data– More than 60% find charts or infographics useful

  • Trends and “next” practices — 80% cited identification of new and relevant trends as important

  • Industry issues and current events — More than 60% said that content that delivers underlying important current events and issues was useful to them

Great content is a win-win

Great content not only generates firm awareness, it also showcases a firm’s expertise and fosters trust, which in turn leads decision makers to invite companies to invite them to the table. These opportunities not only lead to new business, it also allows firms to demand a premium for their demonstrated and authoritative expertise. It’s a win-win for B2B service providers and the companies in need of their services.

Ian McKellen Dead At 78 Of Cardiac Arrest Is A Celebrity Death Hoax

Ian McKellen dead of cardiac arrest is a celebrity death hoax. There is no truth that the actor died from a heart attack. Rather, a celebrity hoax went viral and fooled many on social media.

Where did this celebrity death hoax originate? The Mail Online published the news article claiming that McKellen had passed from a heart attack. You can read bits from the hoax below.

A spokesperson for Ian McKellen on Tuesday says the English actor has died. He was 78.

In a statement, publicist Rose Ward says McKellen died of cardiac arrest. He had been fighting pneumonia, which caused him to be hospitalised some months ago and was responding to treatment.”

His publicist said cause of his death is probable an acute coronary event, due to natural causes. He had pre-existing medical conditions, Ward said.

However, there is no truth to the report as McKellen is very much alive. Nonetheless, many on social media quickly shared the hoax that McKellen had died. McKellen as recently as Oct. 28 tweeted out the following: “Ready for cooler weather? Photo by Nobby Clark”.

McKellen is currently in a performance of King Lear at the Minerva Theatre in Chichester. Millie from the Minerva Theatre in Chichester told Gay Star News: ‘Ian is very much alive and kicking.”

She confirmed he will be performing as planned in tonight’s show.

Here are some examples of people sharing the celebrity death hoax of McKellen on social media.

McKellen has been scoring rave reviews for his theatrical performance. Lear crumbles gradually, as if he were a Dover cliff being eroded. Loss of faith and gain of humanity: it is a beautifully clear line, but not over insistent. At the beginning, a king in regalia and courtiers raising their arms robotically at any mention of the gods; at the end, a man in a shift with no heavenly overseers.

McKellen became an acclaimed thespian of the British stage with his performances in such works as Edward II. He also became a popular film actor, earning an Oscar nomination for his role in Gods and Monsters. The venerable actor has since cemented his iconic status by starring as Magneto in the X-Men films and Gandalf in The Lord of the Rings franchise.

McKellen is a prominent gay rights activist. He announced that he was a gay man for the first time on BBC Radio in 1988, although he had come out in his personal and professional lives decades earlier. McKellen co-founded Stonewall, a LGBT rights lobbying group in the United Kingdom named after the 1969 Stonewall riots. He has stated that some of his friends refer to him by the nickname “Serena.”

How to Accept Cryptocurrency in Your Business

Many people have never heard of cryptocurrency. Others have and believe that cryptocurrency is not only here to stay, but will become more commonly used in the near future. There are several reasons for this, of course.

Because of its encryption, this digital form of currency is difficult to both forge and steal. Furthermore, it isn’t heavy to carry or dirty like paper money and coins are. Fees are almost non-existent since banks are not necessary in order to complete monetary transactions.

But even if you have heard of cryptocurrency and know about its advantages you may still want to know more about it. For example, you may wonder how to accept cryptocurrency in your business.

1. Understanding Cryptocurrency

If you want to accept cryptocurrency in your business you must first understand that its values in the past have had some wild swings. This means if you decide to begin accepting it, what you get paid today could be worth nothing tomorrow. Of course, it could also be worth thousands.

Transactions are secured by using blockchain, which is a way of digitally recording them using cryptography. In addition, they are not recorded on one central server but instead on a network of many computers. This is why it is so secure.

However, just because it’s more secure doesn’t mean cryptocurrency can’t be stolen at all. In the recent past cyber thieves have made off with millions of dollars of digital currency.

Unfortunately, since cryptocurrency is not backed by any bank or the government, losses from theft are not covered. In addition, the encryption makes it much harder to catch a hacker who steals it.

2. How to Accept Cryptocurrency

One of the first things you must do to accept cryptocurrency is to set up a virtual “wallet”. Each of the wallets has different security features such as backup systems and identification methods.

There are wallets that are available free to users while others must be paid for. Blockchain and Coinbase are a couple of options you could choose from to set up a wallet to hold your cryptocurrency.

Next you must advertise so your customers know they can pay using cryptocurrency. For starters you could put up a small sign that shows that you accept bitcoin. And you can advertise in other ways too, such as over the internet.

Finally, to accept cryptocurrency in your business as payment you may need to set up an app on your computer or phone. The app generates a quick response code, or QR code, that is used in the transaction.

BitPay and CoinBase are two types of payment processors you could choose to complete your cryptocurrency transactions. They may have fees attached, so check out the features of each thoroughly before you decide on one.

3. Is it Legal?

Currency in the U.S. was backed by the gold standard up until 1971. Since then it has been backed by fiat meaning it has value because of government declaration.

However, digital currency such as cryptocurrency is not backed by the government. It only exists through digital transactions.

Regardless, that doesn’t mean it isn’t legal. It just isn’t backed by anyone. That may be one reason not all countries accept it. But that doesn’t preclude you from accepting it as payment in your business.

4. How to Pay Taxes

The IRS does not classify cryptocurrency as money. However, if you intend to accept cryptocurrency in your business you should likely pay taxes on it the same way you would on other income.

Talk to your accountant or tax preparer to make sure you comply with tax rules and regulations.

As cryptocurrency becomes more widely used you may want to start accepting it as well. Now that you know how to accept cryptocurrency in your business you can do so and ensure your business continues to grow in the future.

Reclaim Your LinkedIn Connections as Contact Emails Via Download Your Data

How to download your LinkedIn connections as contacts via download your data

In this article, I will reconnect you with your LinkedIn Contacts—Connections— in a format you can use: first name, last name, company, position, and—most importantly—email address. It’s still easy but not completely intuitive. Don’t let LinkedIn hold your LinkedIn Connections hostage, extract all that value from all your commitment to your LinkedIn business connections.

Back on July 23, 2015, LinkedIn removed its contact export tool. Everyone thinks this was selfish and short-sighted. The blowback from the greater LinkedIn community resulted in some semblance of retreat.

Instead of a contacts export, LinkedIn renamed it as Connections download and it’s part of the Download your data subsection of the Basics section of Setting & Privacy section of the Account drop-down menu when you click on your lovely own face, illustrating the Me button in the top navigation bar if you’re logged in to LinkedIn — the resulting URL, that you can link to directly, is called LinkedIn Member Datamaybe this direct link will make this whole thing easier for us all.

Once you get to the Download your data section, only check the Connections box.

Don’t worry about Imported Contacts because these are only the contacts that you, yourself, synced, shared, or uploaded, to LinkedIn.

Only Connections matters and downloads into a ZIP that looks a little like Basic_LinkedInDataExport_10-24-2017.zip.

Open that up and you’ll see a Connections.csv file.

For those of you who haven’t worked with them, a CSV file, “a CSV is a comma separated values file which allows data to be saved in a table structured format [source]” and can be opened with any spreadsheet app such as MS Excel, Google Sheets, LibreOffice Calc, Apple Numbers, etc.

How to download your LinkedIn connections as contacts via download your data

Before importing your Connections.csv file into your own contacts or into your own Customer relationship management (CRM) variant, you’ll need to open up that CSV file with your chosen editor and make some template changes in order to make that import compatible. I import my LinkedIn Connections into Contactually.

When I download my Connections.csv from LinkedIn, it gives me First Name, Last Name, Email Address, Company, Position, Connected On, and Tags records—an incompatible format for importing into my CRM.

So, I need to download Contactually’s import template on their import contacts page and do a bunch of copy and pasting to make sure we’re all good, including the essential Bucket record.

How to download your LinkedIn connections as contacts via download your data

So, be sure to check the FAQ of your own CRM or online address book to make sure you optimize your Connections.csv content to be compatible with your platforms.

I guess that’s it. Let me know if you have any questions. Happy to help.

I make sure I download my Connections every few months because I am pretty active at making connections on LinkedIn, so I like to keep my BD campaign topped up with folks who are opting in to being my besting on LinkedIn.

Goodluck and godspeed!
