The Sex Pistols allegedly being financed by the USSR to destabilize Western democracy is fake news. A Facebook page for punk fans recirculated the old and fake story that the Sex Pistols were part of a KGB plot to promote dissent in the West. However, a KGB agent admitting a connection between the band and the USSR is fake news.
Where did this fake news originate? Facebook page “The Church of PUNK” shared an article on May 9, 2017, reporting that a KGB agent admitted that the band the Sex Pistols were an operation backed by the former Soviet Union to destabilize Western democracy. You can see a screenshot of the false accusation below.
However, this fake story was originally posted in April 2015 in an article that reported that at the time it was published, a former KGB agent had just disclosed the punk rock plot.
Alexandrei Varennikovic Voloshin, a retired KGB agent, has admitted this week on National Russian Television (NTV) that the Union of Soviet Socialist Republics (USSR) was behind the creation of the 1970s punk scene and financed major punk bands such as the Sex Pistols, the Clash and the Ramones.
The USSR government at the time spent “hundreds of millions of rubles” on this covert operation destined to “create utter chaos” and “pervert the Western youth to nihilist, anti-establishment and anti-american ideologies” he explained in an hour long interview broadcast on national television.
Here are some examples of people sharing the fake news on social media.

The Sex Pistols were an English punk rock band formed in London in 1975. Although they initially lasted just two and a half years and produced only four singles and one studio album, Never Mind the Bollocks, Here’s the Sex Pistols, they are considered one of the most influential acts in the history of popular music, having started the punk movement in the United Kingdom, and inspired many later punk rock, thrash metal and alternative rock musicians.
The KGB was designed to be a state security committee and was attached to the Council of Ministers. However, it operated more independently than any of the other bodies of government within the Soviet Union. The KGB was the world’s largest spy and state-security machine, involved in all aspects of life of everyday people in the Soviet Union.
