Philadelphia Flyers defenseman Shayne Gostisbehere received a scary cut that had fans gasping. Last year’s rookie sensation played in his first game of the young NHL season on Friday night at the Los Angeles Kings. While the Flyers won the game, 4-2, Gostisbehere almost was taken out of the game. And, that would have been a bad start to the promising season.
In the first period, Gostisbehere was skating in the defensive zone when Kings forward Kyle Clifford tumbled to the ice in front of him. His right leg lifted up and his right skate caught Gostisbehere on the face, according to Yahoo. The moment had the Flyers Nation holding their breath. Check out the video yourself to see what happened.
Gostisbehere got up, clutching his face. The damage was, thankfully, minimal: a slice across his right cheek. Nothing more.
After the game, he thanked divine intervention for that, according to Dave Isaac of the Courier Post:
“I just looked up and something hit me,” Gostisbehere said. “I checked real quick and realized I was leaking a bit. God was with me on that one. I’ll thank Him for that.”
Gostisbehere raised his hand to his face, saw blood and hustled to the bench. The Flyers’ medical staff glued the cut, which wasn’t deep, and he didn’t miss a shift.
Here are some reactions from social media.

Why is hockey the best?! Because players like @s_ghost14 can take a skate blade to the face and not miss a single shift. They are warriors.

Flyers coach Dave Hakstol said he didn’t realize what had happened.
“I didn’t know if it was a skate, a stick or what,” he said. “I saw him and saw the replay. When you see the replay, you realize how close that came to being really bad.”
