The latest move by DomainTools represents a lot of what is going on in the domain world. Making money off domain investors is tough. Its a small group. We are used to getting a lot for a little. The entire Internet really has become use to free. I have always traded services for all my tools so I have never had to pay for any. There are a few that I would pay for like Expireddomains.net, DomainIQ and DomainTools but I honestly can not say I would pay the current monthly fees because I don’t use them enough to justify their cost. But I appreciate the fact that I have them because they are the best tools around. But even the best tools have a cost to value relationship that may not be affordable. I am not a research writer so I don’t really do a lot of background checks on names. Just a few a month for my domain purchases. I don’t monitor domain regularly but I do use DomainIQ to follow the buys and sells of domain investors I think are good at what they do. And because I am curious. But I get why people are upset at DomainTools. I also get why they did it. As a businessman, the thing that interest me the most is the results. Will the increase in revenue surpass the loss of customer and the ill will? As expected the competing services jumped all over it and offered discounts and a lot of “we still love you”.
