What Your Business Can Learn From Those Back to School Shopping Ads (Watch)

If you’ve turned on a TV, opened up a newspaper or even gone online in the last few weeks, you’ve probably seen some back to school shopping ads targeted at college students. And even though college students aren’t exactly known for their deep pockets, there’s a really good reason retailers are spending so much time and money trying to appeal to that demographic.

That’s because, according to the National Retail Federation, families with college students will spend nearly $900 on back to school shopping this year. And some of those dorm accessories and back to school essentials will need to be replaced throughout the next couple of years or even into a students’ early adult years. So the retailers that provide a good experience for college students now could be more likely to create loyal customers who will buy from them for years to come.

A Lesson in Creating Loyal Customers

Whether your target customers happen to be college students and their families or another group entirely, take a lesson from back-to school marketers. Don’t just focus on single purchase customers. Look for ways you can serve that customer base again and again — perhaps with upgrades of the products they buy, related accessories or added services like returns or repairs offered after the purchase. Make sure customer service is excellent to create loyal customers who come back again and again.
