Daniel Craig’s Commitment To Showtime’s Purity Will Not Affect Return To James Bond

If Daniel Craig chooses to return to the James Bond franchise, the team behind the 007 films are not worried about Craig’s commitment to the Showtime series Purity. The show is not expected to interfere with the production of James Bond 25, should Craig reprise his role as 007. This is great news for fans who would like to see Craig make one more go.

The future of the James Bond franchise and Craig’s role in it has been up in the air for awhile now. After the release of Spectre, it seemed like Daniel Craig was ready to hang up his gun and handsome suits for good.

Speaking at the Television Critics Association press tour (via Deadline), Showtime president and CEO David Nevins said he does not think the new series will preclude the actor from the next Bond movie, though that may change should production on the film begin earlier than expected.

“It depends when they do the next James Bond movie, but I don’t think it precludes him, is the answer. This will largely be completed during the course of 2017, depending how long they’re willing to wait and shoot the next Bond. There might be some breaks somewhere, but (production) will be fairly continuous.”

Production on Purity’s first two seasons will be “fairly continuous,” according to Nevins, with the majority of the project expected to be “completed during the course of 2017.” That should theoretically give Craig time to film Bond 25, as according to a report published earlier this year, there currently isn’t a workable script for the film, “and the creative elements have yet to come into place.”

If Craig does not come back, then it’ll be time for an all-new James Bond. There have already been plenty of actors rumored to be in the running to star as the iconic spy. Tom Hiddleston’s name gets thrown around often and Idris Elba is a close second.

Purity is based on the book of the same name by the author Jonathan Franzen, hit the cable and streaming marketplace in February, with Showtime emerging as an early frontrunner based on an aggressive offer. Field will direct all 20 hours of the limited series, which he will co-write with Franzen and David Hare (The Hours, The Reader). Craig, Field, Rudin, Franzen, Hare and EIi Bush executive produce. Purity will begin production in 2017 and will air in two installments over the course of two years.

A cryptic message from the past leads James Bond (Daniel Craig) to Mexico City and Rome, where he meets the beautiful widow (Monica Bellucci) of an infamous criminal. After infiltrating a secret meeting, 007 uncovers the existence of the sinister organization SPECTRE. Needing the help of the daughter of an old nemesis, he embarks on a mission to find her. As Bond ventures toward the heart of SPECTRE, he discovers a chilling connection between himself and the enemy (Christoph Waltz) he seeks.
