The baddest villain of them all is back. So, forget about all those rumors regarding the reasons for reshoots on Rogue One: A Star Wars Story because Darth Vader, the Dark lord of the Sith, has finally made his appearance. James Earl Jones is returning as the voice of Vader, who will loom large as the Emperor’s right hand. His breathing alone will get you excited.
This is the stand-out image of the new amazing trailer for Rogue One: A Star Wars Story, which takes place just prior to the events of the original Star Wars and chronicles the Rebel effort to steal the plans that will allow them to eventually destroy the moon-sized battlestation.
In the two-plus-minute clip, which premiered during the Rio Olympics telecast, fans also got a glimpse at Director Orson Krenic (Ben Mendelsohn) and his Death Troopers.
Rogue One takes place just before 1977’s A New Hope, when the Death Star was being built and Vader was in his prime as the Emperor’s galactic enforcer. The timeline allows Edwards to riff on familiar iconography and designs, and from the Rebel Base to the Stormtroopers Rogue One almost looks like it will be a love letter to the ’70s feel of the original — no surprise, given Edwards’ own well-known fandom. The reveal in today’s trailer also echoes the same kind of marketing strategy used for The Force Awakens, when audiences were given their first look at Han Solo in the “Chewie, we’re home” closer in that film’s second teaser.
Rogue One tells the story of resistance fighters who have united to steal plans to the dreaded Death Star. Felicity Jones leads the cast as Jyn Erso alongside Mads Mikklesen who plays her father, Galen Erso. Diego Luna (Milk, Killing Them Softly) stars as Captain Cassian Andor with Donnie Yen (Ip Man, Blade II) as the blind spiritual warrior Chirrut Imwe, Jiang Wen (Let the Bullets Fly, Devils on the Doorstep) as his heavily armored best friend Baze Malbus,, Alan Tudyk (Firefly) as the droid K-2SO, Riz Ahmed (Nightcrawler, Four Lions) as the Rebel pilot Bodhi Rook, plus Forest Whitaker (The Last King of Scotland) as Saw Gerrera, a character first introduced in Star Wars: The Clone Wars, and Ben Mendelsohn (Bloodline, Mississippi Grind) as the film’s main antagonist, Director Orson Krennic.
John Knoll, the Academy Award-winning visual effects supervisor who currently serves as chief creative officer at Industrial Light & Magic, is executive producing the film along with Simon Emanuel (The Dark Knight Rises, Fast & Furious 6) and Jason McGatlin (Tintin, War of the Worlds). Kathleen Kennedy and Tony To (“Band of Brothers,” “The Pacific”) are on board to produce with John Swartz (Star Wars: The Force Awakens) attached to co-produce. It was also recently confirmed that Alexandre Desplat (The Grand Budapest Hotel, The King’s Speech) will be providing the score.
Directed by Gareth Edwards, Rogue One: A Star Wars Story is set for release on December 16, 2016.
