Mariah Carey began her second performance on Dick Clark’s New Year’s Rockin’ Eve by asking where her hot tea was on stage. Noting that she was missing out on it, Carey said she would brave through the performance like the people outside. Carey sang “Hero” for all the people in the world fighting injustice. After last year’s headline-making performance for all the wrong reasons, Carey put in the time to make sure this year’s highly anticipated come back would be flawless.
Of course, Carey would be under a larger microscope in case she made any new mistake this year. “I’ll be just like everyone else with no hot tea,” the singer, adorned in a large white coat over a sparkling leotard, told the crowd. Despite the lack of a comforting hot liquid, Carey had no trouble hitting the high notes she is known for and earned wild applause from the audience.
Carey successfully opened last year’s set with a rendition of the New Year’s classic “Auld Lang Syne,” but while she was performing her 1991 hit single “Emotions,” she abruptly stopped singing, though her dancers continued performing behind her. “We can’t hear,” Carey told the crowd in Times Square, trying to continue. “We didn’t have a sound check, but it’s New Year’s, baby. It’s OK, guys.” Refusing to sing the song, she said, “I’m trying to be a good sport here.

On “Good Morning America,” Seacrest, who’s again hosting this year with Jenny McCarthy, said that the “new year [is] about new beginnings.” The TV host admitted that it was not his idea to have Carey return, but called it “a good idea.” he said, “I think people are excited to see her back. People love her. She’s beloved.”
McCarthy said offering Carey a second chance was in line with this year’s telecast theme of “Unity.”
“One of the most exciting news stories about New Year’s Eve is giving Mariah Carey that second chance that I think everybody deserves. The theme this year is ‘Unity.’ I had a moment saying, what do I want my New Year’s Resolution to be, and then I thought about the second chance that we are giving Mariah and I thought that is a really good thing to be an example of on this TV show and carry it forward. I am cheering her on and hoping that she nails it and I think she will.”
